Towering Illuminations
What is it about illuminations that make everyone so giddy? I’m no exception. There is just something about the night sky bedazzled in color that gives pause to chaos and invites us to be momentarily mesmerized, entranced. So, it’s not lost on me how lucky I am that each night from couch in Tokyo, I am able to behold the iconic Tokyo Tower awash in glistening lights.
And what’s more? Frequently, these lights are designed to commemorate a cause — Breast Cancer Awareness or Pride — or a holiday, whether global or local, like today.
Today is White Day in Japan. And what is that, you might ask? You see, in Japan, Valentine’s Day is the day a woman demurely declares her affections for a man with chocolates and other sweet treats. One month later, on March 14, the man reciprocates if he is so inclined with candy marshmallows. Hence, White Day. It’s a sweet reminder that romance is still glowing despite what world news would lead us to believe.
And, for me, this twinkling celebration outside my window brightens my day, especially when it’s coupled with a full moon!
